AJ, this is very true. Nail clippers are a “must-have” for all pet owners. Due to the fact that the nail trimmer you suggest is made specifically for the at-home pet market, the units are not particularly sturdy or long lasting. For those of you who have purchased one of these grinders or are considering it, it would be a good idea to have your dog’s nails professionally trimmed first so that they are relatively short. Then, you can try to use the grinder on the short nails and take off just little bits at a time. These trimmers are not made to grind off large amounts of nail. They just don’t have the power to do so, nor can they be expected to do that kind of a job. Also, be careful. The grinders CAN grind down to the quick (the live blood vein in the nail) and cause pain. The action of the grinder will cauterize the vein if you get too close, but still you are causing pain.
