I very much want to groom my dog myself. I’m trying to obtain as much info. as I can without taking a dog grooming class. I need to know what tools I will need to start with and then can add to them as his coat changes as he gets older. I like the Teddy Cut the best.

I groom my dog myself because it’s a rare breed and most professional groomers don’t know his cut. However, I’m having trouble getting parts of the haircut right. There’s a dog show in our area this weekend and I thought I might see how my breed’s exhibitors do it. Is there a proper etiquette is for asking someone if I can watch them groom their dog? Also, if the breed is scheduled for 12:00, what time will they be working on their dogs?

Any Experienced groomers out there ? Please tell me, how you would groom this dog. He was found as a stray, and has lots of matts all over, and ticks and fleas. Is there any way to save some of his coat, so he still looks cute after his cut? How ? http://www.wernerphoto.com/shaggy/Shaggy…

For the last weeks my dog has been occasionally scratching his ears and shaking his head, this week it got worse so I made an called my vet (who offers grooming services), and made me an appointment for both on Tuesday next week.
I let the person over the phone know what’s going on and she said that they’ll take a look at him before the grooming, but in the case they can’t groom him (contagious?) is it safe for me to clip his hair myself? His hair is getting matted and I don’t want it to get worse.
If it helps give visuals, he’s a maltipoo so his hair is pretty long.

This depends on coat type or breed. Which are you asking about?

MandieLuvsYou: Not so “duh” dear. There are exceptions and different methods for different breeds.
ADDED:
Ah! Just the info I was looking for!
I suggest line brushing for your dog. You lift the coat against the grain with
one hand, and literally seperate out a line 1/2 to 1 inch wide, and brush it
out with a slicker brush until all the loose undercoat and tangles are gone.
Do this line by line until the whole dog is brushed. Then take a comb
through to get any undercoat and tangles that were missed. If the mats are really bad, your only remedy might be to take her to a groomer to be shaved down so you can start fresh and prevent the mats. There are mat splitting combs available, but it sounds like you are trying to get her done tonight, and if you don’t have one on hand, you might not be able to get one tonight.

I just took my dog back from my brother(who lives in the country, thats why he had him) but he’s SUPER MATTED. like his ears are conjoined to his neck in matts, his legs have matts under them by the groin and chest and his legs are fairly tangled. Im afraid to take him to a groomer because hes 16. How(if possible) can i groom him myself? Hes an English Cocker Spaniel.

I truly want to work with animals for a living.
I am fighting back and forth the idea of going to dog grooming school or going to school to become a Vet Tech.
Currently I hold a very solid job (office work), and volunteer at the local shelter.
Any advice would be helpful
Thank you
